It sounds ridiculous but the reality is that twice on flights I almost died the first time it happened was in the late 1990s when I missed a Silk Air flight between Jakarta and Singapore, where I then lived. I only found out the next morning while open the newspaper and confirm with my ticket that I actually had been booked on the doomed flight. I knew two people both employees at American Express. Who died on the flight.
The second time I was living in Mexico at the time I boarded a flight on a CRJ regional aircraft between Mexico City, and Merida. Pilot was in a rush, and he flew too high and too fast, and suddenly we lost lift. You could hear the pilot grunting as he tried to regain control of the aircraft that was beginning a flat spin. It lasted about a minute we must’ve lost 20,000 feet in a few minutes but few passenger realize how serious it was only the grunting of the pilot made it clear that something was seriously wrong. Eventually, the pilot regain control of the aircraft, and we proceeded to our destinations, but the incident report that came out a few days later indicated that the pilot had made a grave error that almost resulted in a crash.
There are other incidents, a China airline 747 having one of its thrust reverser open up during takeoff.
My stories are hardly exceptional. I have many friends who have face similar challenges in their flight career, but like me, they were lucky it is well known that for an aircraft to crash. Several things have to go wrong simultaneously in all of these cases there was one incident that did not take place on the silk air flight I missed connection by nearly 2 1/2 hours. It was not even a close.
So is life
