Canada is a large country with an insignificant role in global affairs. It major claim to fame is to have the longest, largely unprotected border with the United States. Over the past two months, Canada has become President Trump's favourite punching bag.
At first, it seemed that it was because the then-Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, had made fun of him at a G8 conference. His party could read the tea leaves as well as anyone else; they were going to lose the federal election (scheduled for November 2025) badly. On January 6th, Trudeau resigned. First because of internal pressure, but also massive pressure from the Conservative Party.
A month ago, already with no known leader the Liberals had gone from a 20-point deficit, where the Conservative opposition had a huge advantage, to near parity with the Conservatives. The chief of the Party called Pierre Polievre, had been playing the "pro-MAGA" card for nearly 18 months already, closely aligning his statements with those of the American President.
The new leader of the Liberal Party was elected 10 days ago. His name is Mark Carney, he was in the early 2000s the Governor of the Bank of Canada, and then, for the first time in the history of the Bank of England, he was the first ever non-British citizen to be the Governor of the Bank of England.
The problem for the Conservative party and its leader in particular is that he now looks like the boot licker to the American President, who is imposing 25% to 50% tariffs on all goods exported to the United States. The vast majority of Canadians stand in the middle and vote for one or the other party, depending on the mood. The electoral process is short in Canada; on April 28th, the country will vote.
The lastest poll shows the Liberals ahead of the Conservatives by 3 points, they were down by 20 points less than three months ago. Right now, the Liberals are looking at a majority government
The strategic mistake was entirely the error of the Conservative Party; they should have wanted to fight the Liberals in the November elections, with Trudeau in charge, instead, they are facing Mark Carney, a respected man, and the one best equipped to deal with the Americans.
It's what is called an own-goal
