ATR 72-500 Crash

The images were horrifying there is no other way of saying it.   The drop from 17,000 to ground level in less than a minute must have been the most harrowing thing possible.   There are two culprits, (a) flying outside the flight envelope and (b) icing.    Which is the same thing, complete loss of lift.   

From the stories, the aircraft was in a decent mode at 17,000 at 205 kn, when it suddenly dropped like a stone.   Flying outside the flight envelope usually occurs at altitude, and not on landing.  Few people are aware of this but at 40,000 feet the air speed difference between a high-speed and a low-speed stall is surprisingly small.   

The reason icing is the likely culprit is that the ATR-500 has a long history of "medium icing performance", but also that pilots in the area were warned of icing conditions, as a pilot reduces speed, less hot air is bled in the wing leading edge, so it is more than possible that this was the culprit, rumors are that there were no communications from the cockpit which tells you that the pilots were completely surprised by the icing event.    Aviate, Navigate, Comunicate are the motto of all pilots, control the aircraft, and they were in a death-spiral when the video is shown, there is no forward momentum, yet the engines are at full blast.   

A tragedy there is no doubt, but it's also important to note that this is one of the very few comercial aircraft accidents in 2024

Trump and Venezuela...

The US now owns Venezuela…and not in a good way.  America is not known for its nation building skills, and yet it now owns the disaster that is Venezuela.   Starvation and exodus are the natural progression.   In addition it will become a haven for narco-terrorists, more so than it already was. I am sure that Trump and his friends really thought that little attack very well…I guess that he will now attack Iran now.

Demographics

 I am preparing a kind of family tree for our children so that they know where they came from.  In my family I am the only survivor, although my brother and sister died recently they were both in their seventies (a story I told already).    It was a fun process, but it provided more than that.  First, I married relatively young I was 26 when I married and nearly 30 when our first child was born.   I was looking at my ancestors.  On my mother's side, she had 6 siblings, Four died before the age of 30, two in war, and two from illnesses.  Only she and a single sister survived.   The two boys had a child each but they died in WWII, and the other sister died as an infant.   what is interesting is that every one of my mother's siblings had children in their early 20s.   I know that my mom was hardly 20 when my brother was born.    What is remarkable is that among our friends, we are the only ones to have fou...
