Nearly 20% of registered Republicans are socially conservative born-again Christians, who have crusaded for the past 40 years to make all forms of abortion illegal. It is that group's single issue (well book burning too...). From Heritage Foundation project 2025, they all have the same objective pass a federal law to make abortion illegal throughout the country.
As of last night, the official party platform is pro labour, states right (aka the abortion issue) and isolationist, pro Israel, China, and Russia. Not making this up, the platform is that Taiwan should fend for itself, that Israel should kill all the Muslims and that America will stop funding Ukraine. A lot of Republicans are pissed (aka Ron DeSantis being #1, and Nikky Haley #2) with this outcome. Anyone from the Corporate or neo-con part of the party is watching this not because their side lost, but because their side of the Republican party was not in the room when these changes happened. They are out!
I want to say that the Secret Service screwed up when Candidate Trump was shot at, but now they will have to contend with the ultra right wing Christian nationalists (aka the Crazies) who have been told that Donald Trump will not enact their dream version of America, which looks surprisingly like the Handsmaid's Tales. The Crazies have nowhere to go, but they do have some well armed friends. As for the Neocons and Businesses they will either stand aside (likely) or support the Democrats (very unlikely).
Big business was not at the table in 2020, and now not at the table in 2024, they know they need to find a new home. Neocons were not at issue in 2020, but they see the 2024 GOP and are very unhappy. BTW I suspect that the Heritage Foundation is also pissed as hell today.
Interesting times
Note: Candidate Trump never cared about foreign policy, he admires Putin and Xi for "doing what needs to be done" and wishes (and hopes) to do the same to his opponents when he wins the White House. Trump's problem is that he has no attention span or any interest in policy, he never did. The GOP has no "policy" it only has a "we are stepping away and doing nothing" policy. Despite controlling both chambers for the past four years Congress has done nothing...absolutely nothing but posturing.
Note2: The vast majority of Americans don't follow politics at all. Anything said or done before Labor day is inconsequential.
