Over the past two years, the US government has been supplying the Ukrainians with arms, ammunition and vehicles for their fight with the Russians. What is not generally known, is that about 80% of the ammunition was from US stock that will expire within the next 36 months. The vast majority of fighting vehicles that the US has supplied are vehicles that were used in the Gulf.
So the US has given about $ 30 billion in military aid, but about 80% of that was for equipment or ammunition that would have to be destroyed within the next three years. US accounting is such that the value of the ammunition was the value it cost to the US government, when in fact if they had not sold/given it to the Ukrainians they would have to spend money to destroy it.
I thought that was a fun fact. BTW the reason it's so high, is that a lot of the more modern systems are too complicated for the Ukrainians to maintain, because the key is not only for the stuff to work for a few weeks, but until it is used, and maintenance is critical to military material.
Fun fact
Note: Over the past two years the US has provided $75 billion in total aid to Ukraine. The US is by far the largest supporter of the war, and accounts for 60% of total.
